Career switches may have been frowned upon just 10 years ago but it has become increasingly acceptable to do so. Famous career switchers like Jeff Bezos and Buzzfeed’s Jonah Peretti have paved the way for a generation of career changers. There’s little to no point in staying at a job or in an industry that you don’t see yourself benefitting from or contributing to. If you’re considering making a career switch, there are 3 major questions you need to ask yourself.

1. Do you love what you do?

In other words: are you stuck in a rut? Your job should get you excited and out of bed come Monday morning. If you find yourself being dragged to work feeling unmotivated and jaded, chances are that your job satisfaction is at an all time low. 

2. Are you good at what you do?

If you’re good at your job, you’re employing and honing your strengths on a day-to-day basis, contributing to your overall happiness at your job. But if that’s not the case, the daily struggle and challenges may be too much strain on your mental and personal well-being.

3. What do you want to work on?

Are you interested in developing a skill or exploring an area that’s been of interest for a while? Would you be able to do that at your current company? You need to figure out what your company needs at the moment and evaluate if you’re going to be able to fill that need and/or if your interests align with that of your company.  

When asking yourself these questions, follow (and stay true to) your gut. No matter how difficult a decision that might end up being. If all your answers point to switching careers, know that you don’t have to jump ships immediately. You can have a side gig as a freelancer, take online classes to increase your skills and knowledge, join Meetup groups or networking events to build your network first. These steps will enable you to build a strong foundation and gain some security before taking the final leap.
