What Does It Take to Work at TikTok?

The growth of TikTok has been nothing short of meteoric. In 2018, it was the most downloaded app in the U.S., and in 2019 it surpassed one billion downloads globally. Its short-video format is a breeding ground for creativity and talent, with user-generated content encompassing everything from comedic shorts to quick-fire makeup tutorials to stylish dancing to endless amounts of lip-syncing.

As a company, the growth of the workforce reflects the growth of the app. TikTok has developed a truly global presence with offices in cities including Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Jakarta, Seoul, and Tokyo. And while technology might be the driver of TikTok, community is the heart. This is true for both the users of the app and for those that work at the company. TikTok is always looking for ways to improve and enrich their user experience, and they’re also looking for ways to help their employees  grow and innovate within the company.

We visited the TikTok London office to learn more about what they look for in new hires. This is what you need to be prepared to do to become a part of such a fast-paced, energetic and growing company.

Express your creativity

The users of the TikTok app are renowned for their incredible creativity, and everything about the app is designed to enhance this. But at TikTok, the creativity doesn’t stop with the users. The company wants team members to develop and express their own creative sides. This can be in the form of writing beautiful code as an engineer, coming up with innovative ways to engage with the community, or generating cool ideas for new markets. If you want to exercise your creative muscle, TikTok is the right place.

Embrace your ambition

The rapid expansion of TikTok as a company means that there are numerous opportunities for growth and development. Team members are strongly encouraged to initiate new projects and to increase their responsibilities, right from the start. TikTok invest heavily in their employees professional development and empower them to advance or even change their career within the company. Is pushing the boundaries of your career something that appeals to you? If so, say hello to TikTok.

Be open and humble

The understanding at TikTok is that great teamwork and collaboration is built through an attitude of being open and humble. Everyone working at the company is an expert in their respective fields, but that doesn’t stop people from listening to and learning from each other. Each person gets a seat at the table and all voices are heard. If you would like to be part of a culturally diverse team with the right attitude, this is what you also need to bring to the table.

Live and breathe digital media

It’s not essential to have worked at other digital media outlets before embarking on a career at TikTok, but it is important to have a deep understanding of digital media trends and the direction the industry is going in. You should immerse yourself in TikTok to really get to know what makes the app and the users tick, and you should have a good knowledge of other platforms and how they work too. Trends and interests change fast, and TikTok mirrors this. You need to be open to learning every day and stay agile.
